To the families and nobles – and indeed the average citizen – this is an honored state for the dearly departed.

Additionally, Gloomwood craftsmen are recognized far and wide for their skill with all manner of wood and natural materials, as well as being the only city-state that is capable of mass-producing books of all shapes and sizes.Īlthough it has many attractive and unique features, the city is most widely known for a singularly unusual group of citizens referred to in Gloomwood as “The Honored Dead.” The city’s nobles and high-ranking civilians are privy to a practice that has been in place since the city’s founding in 15 PC –these families do not bury their dead, but rather employ them in the creation of undead through the use of necromantic spells and rituals. The oak tree is the picture of health some 600 years later, and still guards the entrance to the College grounds. One of the city’s primary institutions is the sprawling College of Magic, located just off the city’s main street, wherein stands the oak tree featured on the city’s flag, originally found by Drakus Cowell, the first Bakrasahni Royal Mage. The City District, on the other hand, encompasses the entirety of the buildings, farms, homes and various municipal structures within the city itself. For the last thirty years, this Forest has been rumored to be haunted by the Fae, and it is said that many children have been snatched from their prams, to be raised as changelings. The Forest District is patrolled by the Forest Watch, which is responsible for the maintenance and safety of the surrounding Gloomwood Forest. Gloomwood has two main Districts, the City District and the Forest District.

One councilmember is always appointed by the Change Council - Gloomwood, a little-known and less-understood group within the Gloomwood governmental structure. Each year, a Civic Council Leader is elected from amongst the twelve. Gloomwood is ruled by the Civic Council - Gloomwood, a group of twelve men and women who hold hereditary positions and govern the day-to-day activities of the city and its environs. They revere their ancestors greatly, and form close, tight-knit family structures that lead to a similar style of government. The people are hardy and intelligent, and are of a more practical mind than most. Gloomwood was founded as a retreat and college for those seeking knowledge about the ways of magic and the truths revealed only through introspection.įormerly known as King’s Reach until shortly before the Fall, when it was officially renamed, the city-state has always been fiercely independent, and is farthest away from any other Bakrasahni settlements, save only for the Empire of Rathon. Nature figures largely in the day-to-day lives of the city’s people, and the few roads are lined with trees and cultivated greenery that, in the sunset, gives off a slight purple hue. Nestled amongst the trees and pathways of what is now known as the Gloomwood Forest, the city itself is composed mainly of farmers, scholars, and mages, and is quiet and serene, for the most part.

Roughly two weeks west of Drakesbridge and the same distance north of Redmarch stand the small homes and quiet streets of the Lands of Gloomwood. Gloomwood is also the site of the former civilization of the Black Elves, who had made extensive excavations before their disappearance during the Fall of Bakrasah. Shortly before the destruction of the Lord of Undeath, Redmarch was made into a “protectorate” of Gloomwood, though this did not last long. Gloomwood also controlled the Principality of Redmarch until that city’s liberation as well. It was originally the center of magical and other types of research in the kingdom, but fell to the forces of the Necromancer and has been under the rule of the Lord of Undeath until very recently. Gloomwood is a small city at the foot of the Serpent Range, surrounded by a massive forest.
